Another adventure begins!
It’s almost a month to the date since I started walking barefoot. The four weeks flew past without any impatience. That was really the big lesson in Phase 1. The challenge will be to hold my horses now on.
Hit the road today for an easy run around the place and it was such a delight. A breezy run with a couple of walk breaks. It felt really, really good to be moving like that. Perhaps I could have gone slower but the lure of the crisp morning air and springy feet was too much to resist. I ran happy and free.
There was no huffing like an elephant and my legs were quite fresh despite a hard yoga class yesterday. There was another (free)runner π with me and my worry about dragging her down was baseless. We had a good run together and once again I had to give up on my preconceived ideas about how hard it would be to get back.
One of the most important lessons yoga has taught me has been the value of a base. Take as much time as required to work on the basics and the ramp up is faster and with less risk of injury. I suppose it boils down to using the mind completely really when one spends time on repeating the same seemingly simple action. Eventually the boredom of the movement goes and the inquiry begins.
The plan ahead is to alternate barefoot walking and running for a bit and stick to time and feel rather than distance.

I come across very few barefoot runners although there are more people wearing minimalist. soles. At Cambridge parkrun today, out of 450 participating, only one was running barefoot. I don’t often see him but, inspired by your blog, I’d like to ask him about why he’s running barefoot and how he experiences it.

It’s good of you to share a picture of your sole with us Sonia, and very healthy it looks too! You know how I worry about damage to the skin. It sounds like it is going well with the barefoot running. I admire your courage to do it, I would be afraid of hurting my feet and of course people looking at me and asking where my shoes are!!!! I can see myself maybe doing a couple of laps of the grassy park or on the beach, but not running down my road !! Well done to youππ

Thanks Julie. It is an adventure and without any pressure so a very enjoyable experience. Running and walking barefoot are very different though..

I am still mixed up about it. I run with shoes, barefoot on alternate days. But have to admit that it feels way better barefoot. Trail running I find tough barefoot. Had real bad knocks on feet last time I did trail barefoot. Grounded me for 2 days.

I’d say listen to your feet and go really really slow. I did too much too soon about 6 months ago and had to go back to shoes. This time I started from absolute scratch. A month of no running at all but just walking barefoot. Then slowly run/walk but very very little.
In my experience trail surfaces are better to start walking on as it forces you to auto correct. The more difficult the terrain, the faster you learn to walk right.
Needless to say, listen to your body and take the time off until your feet become strong. And we always have the freedom to go back to shoes if it doesn’t work.
Happy running!
